{"id":4137,"date":"2022-09-08T15:43:19","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T20:43:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lesleyelis.com\/elisblog\/?p=4137"},"modified":"2022-09-08T15:45:19","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T20:45:19","slug":"ways-to-use-the-chat-in-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lesleyelis.com\/elisblog\/2022\/09\/08\/ways-to-use-the-chat-in-person\/","title":{"rendered":"Ways to Use \u201cThe Chat\u201d in Person"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we transition back to traditional classrooms, we may find we\u2019re missing the advantages the chat feature gave us while meeting virtually through an online meeting tool.<\/p>\n<p>Adapting a few online chat activities, <a href=\"https:\/\/weand.me\/chad-littlefield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chad Littlefield<\/a>, Co-founder &amp; Chief Experience Officer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weand.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We and Me<\/a>, shares <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZPLg8jAMymo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 Clever Ways To Use \u201cThe Chat&#8221; In Person<\/a>\u201d via YouTube.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZPLg8jAMymo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>His first way is to promote passing of notes. You will need to prepare a stack of note cards or a pad of paper. Strategically design pauses when teaching the content to have students write down a quick response to what has been said. Then pass those notes around with each other. Some advantages he mentions is that you make sure that everybody\u2019s perspective is included, it is introvert-friendly, you exchange a lot of ideas quickly, and it is a fun, kinesthetic activity. <em>(Tae-Jin\u2019s bonus thought &#8211; you can collect and collate the notes for later use.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Second Idea is to \u201cpopcorn\u201d aha moments. Similar to the idea of passing notes, but instead of writing down and passing around responses, just quickly share out-loud to the whole group. The idea is to get lots of voices out quickly, ideally, within 2-3 minutes of sharing.<em> (Tae-Jin\u2019s bonus thought \u2013 do not be afraid of silence, and do not be discouraged if it doesn\u2019t go as planned the first few times you try this type of activity. There is a learning curve for this type of response that everyone needs to overcome to become comfortable with speaking out.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And finally, a twist on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.edu\/ctl\/think-pair-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pair-Share activity<\/a>. After doing the pair-share activity we\u2019re familiar with, rather than sharing out what you said, have people share out what they heard someone else said.
