{"id":4039,"date":"2021-03-16T16:47:22","date_gmt":"2021-03-16T21:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lesleyelis.com\/elisblog\/?p=4039"},"modified":"2021-03-16T16:47:22","modified_gmt":"2021-03-16T21:47:22","slug":"community-conversations-peer-feedback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lesleyelis.com\/elisblog\/2021\/03\/16\/community-conversations-peer-feedback\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Conversations: Peer Feedback"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">February\u2019s Community Conversation\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">focused on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Peer Feedback<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, led by CLAS and LA+D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> faculty Kim Lowe, Summer Clark, Lisa Spitz, and Bill Porter. They are members of a long<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">standing research group that looks at ways to implement and improve peer review and critique and to \u201ccreate a better learning experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kim Lowe kicked off the conversation by explaining how she had hated peer review as a student and had vowed, \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when I became a professor, I would never do it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d However, she saw the learning benefits and found the <a href=\"https:\/\/livelesley-my.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/g\/personal\/elisresources_lesley_edu\/Ecs10p7YIvNEu9dVwiqHicEBEyBqsrHohQCyujdVHD1E4A?e=a2BL0V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peer review protocol<\/a> the group created highly effective for her students. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1>Creating the Peer Review Protocol<\/h1>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2016, the interdisciplinary group <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">began to study peer revie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">researching best practices for conducting peer feedback assignments, the benefits<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of peer feedback<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and how to address challenges. The benefits of peer review include self-reflection, self-regulation, critical thinking, and communication skills that transfer not only to other classes, but to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0professional careers. It enhances empathy and students\u2019 ability to navigate social and emotional interactions in the classroom while exposing them to perspectives and opinions other than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their instructor.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eer review also requires\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students to participate at a higher level of engagement. They must spend time and energy to provide constructive feedback that the other student can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">utilize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudents may not trust the feedback they receive from other students and may not be sure if they should apply it or not.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0may even doubt their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">own\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ability to provide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">feedback.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Due to these challenges, the first stage of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/livelesley-my.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/g\/personal\/elisresources_lesley_edu\/Ecs10p7YIvNEu9dVwiqHicEBEyBqsrHohQCyujdVHD1E4A?e=a2BL0V\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">peer review\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">protocol <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the group developed is to prepare students to do peer review. In this stage, the instructor builds trust in the process by discussing the strengths of peer review and, perhaps even more importantly, the reasons why they may be skeptical. Faculty should also discuss how peer review will be used within the class and model what effective peer review looks like. It\u2019s also important to assess the feedback given, not just the assignment being reviewed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second stage, the peer review session, is a scaffolded dialogue where students submit their assignment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0identifying\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">areas\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they most want feedback. Other students then provide feedback using a rubric or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by answering a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">series of questions to guide their feedback. Students then review the feedback they received, rewriting it in their words to encourage processing, and determine how or if they will apply it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the final stage, students revise their assignment. They also submit a summary noting how they implemented the feedback they received\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reasons why they made those choices. Summer Clark <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spoke about using peer review to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0help her education students create better lesson plans and believes that it can be used across disciplines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The group encourages faculty to co-create criteria for reviewing work in order to create consensus and understanding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">around what qualities embody good wor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">k<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0regardless whether that work is a drawing, essay, presentation, or business analysis.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, that was just the beginning of the discussion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which included brainstorming strategies with the other attendees. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.microsoftstream.com\/video\/56b372b3-f604-4a6f-af57-192439581019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch the recording<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to hear more and join our <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/lesleycommunityconversations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty Community Conversation Team<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to continue chatting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>February\u2019s Community Conversation\u00a0focused on\u00a0Peer Feedback, led by CLAS and LA+D faculty Kim Lowe, Summer Clark, Lisa Spitz, and Bill Porter.
