Many faculty are enthusiastic about the prospect of using social media tools to extend classroom walls and create technology-enhanced learning activities that are relevant for their students\u2019 lives. The following are recommendations for teaching with social media based on the intersections in these cases.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Connect instructional use of social media to learning outcomes (Bosman&amp; Zagenczyk 2011)<\/li>\n<li>Provide very basic instructions for students to get started<\/li>\n<li>Explain basic functionality and norms of the social media tool<\/li>\n<li>Build specific activities into course design<\/li>\n<li>Scaffold opportunities to interact with peers and others<\/li>\n<li>Respect student privacy across student-led and instructor-led experiences<\/li>\n<li>Educate students about privacy considerations and appropriate use<\/li>\n<li>Articulate communication protocols and norms for each class<\/li>\n<li>Plan for maintenance of communities in between class settings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nConclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><b>Best Practices for Teaching with\u00a0Social <\/b><b>Media,<\/b> <b>Instructor-Led <\/b><b>Assignments<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide option to opt-out or alternate assignment<\/li>\n<li>Provide option not to\u00a0use real names\u00a0or\u00a0real locations<\/li>\n<li>Link to basic tutorials<\/li>\n<li>Let students know that they can delete accounts or\u00a0\u201cunfriend&#8221; in the end<\/li>\n<li>Connect assignment to learning outcomes\u00a0and assess learning according to\u00a0rubric<\/li>\n<li>Never provide individual feedback to students publicly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><b>Best Practices for Student-led<\/b><b>\u00a0Social Media Use<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students should present themselves authentically and adhere to institution social media policy<\/li>\n<li>Apply best practices of instructor-led assignments where applicable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><b>Integrate the social media <\/b><b>within <\/b><b>the course site<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Link the social media participation to the course in the LMS through dynamic\u00a0RSS feed and\/or links to the course hashtag<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nNext Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What did we gain from our inquiry? We were able to identify three key areas for further work.<\/p>\n<p><em>Faculty Professional Development<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promote institutional community building with social media (upcoming: #ToleranceDay @lesley_u)<\/li>\n<li>Provide workshop for faculty on analyzing social media platforms (January 2016)<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate need to offer\u00a0existing online seminar <i>Using Twitter to Develop a PLN<\/i> in Spring 2016<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Enhancement of Institutional Policy<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extend existing Appropriate Use Policy with expanded Social Media Policy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Exchange of Curricular Materials Using\u00a0Social Media<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create space for sharing sample assignments, rubrics and instructions amongst faculty teaching with social media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>To learn more about initiatives related to teaching and learning with social media at Lesley, look us up on twitter @lesleyelis.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nReferences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bosman, L., &amp; Zagenczyk, T.
